  • About the author

Collection development in Communication Studies can be challenging for a number of reasons. First, the field is extremely interdisciplinary. It covers subject areas such as Advertising, Communication, Journalism, Media Studies, Public Opinion Research, Public Relations, Radio and Television Studies, Speech Communication and Telecommunications. Second, in addition to including resources that address the theoretical and academic nature of Communication Studies, a collection must include resources more practical in nature which help prepare students for the mass media industry.  This authoritative and practical guide covers the entire scope of collection development in communication studies. The author informs and guides selectors making decisions throughout the collection development process. Drawing on first-hand experience, the guide:

  • provides an overview of the subject areas within communication studies and discusses how they relate to one another
  • explains how to evaluate a collection and assess users’ needs
  • discusses the economics of the discipline and the types of materials available
  • identifies problematic issues and recommends proven solutions
  • provides an extensive list of selection tools and helpful resources
  • suggests ways to network with colleagues and develop an expertise in collection development and the subject area of communication studies
  • addresses the challenges of developing a collection that meets the needs of the academic researcher and assists in the professional preparation of future media professionals

Additional readings and real-world examples provide a valuable perspective enabling the new or experienced subject collector with an understanding of the issues and skills necessary to become an expert in communication studies collection development.
