The Strange Birds of Flannery O'Connor: A Life

For Ethan Hawke and Maya Hawke, a love of reading runs in the family. Father and daughter most recently bonded over the works of Flannery O’Connor with Ethan co-writing and directing Wildcat, about the acclaimed Southern Gothic writer. In the film, Maya stars as O’Connor alongside Laura Linney as her mother Regina, as she struggles with lupus, the same disease that took her father’s life when she was a child. Desperate to make her mark as a great writer, this crisis pitches her imagination into a feverish exploration of belief.

An actor and musician, Maya Hawke joined the critically acclaimed Netflix drama Stranger Things in its third season and became a fan favorite for her performance as Robin Buckley, the first LGBTQ+ character on the show. Film roles include star turns in Asteroid City, Maestro, and Netflix’s Do Revenge. In addition to Wildcat, Maya can currently be heard as the voice of “Anxiety” in Disney’s Inside Out 2.

Ethan Hawke is one of Hollywood’s most multi-faceted stars: actor, screenwriter, director, producer, and best-selling novelist. His prolific film acting career includes Dead Poets Society; Reality Bites; Gattaca; Training Day; Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead; Boyhood; Before Sunrise and more. He was most recently seen in Netflix’s Leave the World Behind. Ethan made his feature film directing debut in 2001 with Chelsea Walls. In 2022, Hawke directed The Last Movie Stars, a six-part documentary about the lives and careers of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. A best-selling author, he most recently released A Bright Ray of Darkness and the graphic novel Meadowlark: A Coming-of-Age Crime Story.
